Two years ago, Venus Optics sent macro-photographer Thomas
its Laowa 25mm f / 2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro lens for testing. Now, after two
years of continuous use and testing in real conditions, he finally found a way
to share his thoughts in a thoughtful review that will be a huge help for any
extreme macro photographers who view this lens.
To go directly to the pursuit: the lens undoubtedly
impressed Shahan over the past two years and kept very well, becoming his
assistant in extreme macro works.
Comparing Laowa with one of its main competitors, the Canon
MP-E 65mm f / 2.8 1-5x Macro, which he also used widely, Shahan cannot but say
that this is not really too much competition.
“Laowa, in addition to being less than half the price,
weighs about half that of a Canon, which is very important,” says. “Most macro
lenses are very sharp, so I prefer lighter options than others. You will also
notice this difference in weight when packing and after a long day of shooting
outside. ”
In terms of deficiencies, the main complaint is the lack of
automatic control of the diaphragm or any connection of the diaphragm.
“This lens is totally labor-intensive,” explains, concentrating
completely. “Based on the use of reverse lenses, I'm used to it. And although
this is definitely not perfect, for me it is not such a big problem. But be
warned.
To hear Shahan’s thoughts about the lens, see how he uses it
in the field, and see many more examples of images shot using the Laowa 2.5-5x
macro, watch the full video above. His conclusion, after all, is quite simple:
“I actually like this lens,” he speaks at the end of his evaluation.
“And after many years of admiring reversed best part for macros, I really now
take this lens for most of my work with a huge increase [...]. Any lens that
allows people to get closer than ever in affordable, affordable packaging is a
huge leap forward, and I support it. ”
